St John's Window Dedication
Born in Newry, Canon Stanley Coulson moved to Dungannon with his family in his first year. He was educated at Masonic Boys School Dublin and Trinity College Dublin graduating in 1955. It was in Dublin where he met his future wife Iris whom he married in 1958. They had two children Nadine and Nigel. On graduation he was ordained curate to serve in Maghera.
After Maghera he spent two years as Rector of Aughalurcher Parish in the Diocese of Clogher, before becoming Rector of Woodschapel Parish where he would spend the next thirty-four years. During his time in Woodschapel he formed a bowling club, Brownie pack, Guide Company and Cubs. In the Diocese of Armagh, he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Armagh Board of Education. Nearer home over the years he was Chair of the Rainey Board, and also of the High School and Woods Primary School. In 1988 he became a Canon of St Patrick's Cathedral Armagh, and then Chancellor of the Cathedral. In the nineties he was appointed the first Chaplain of the Mothers’ Union to serve in Armagh Diocese.
Nearer home he was cofounder of the Ballyronan gymkhana, an annual event which brought the community together. A true sportsman, his great love was rugby and he was a season ticket holder for the Ulster Club at Kingspan. In his younger days he coached junior cricket with good success. His devotion to his church ministry and his love of youthwork, sport and ponies, are all symbolised in the stained-glass window in Woodschapel Parish Church. Canon Coulson is survived by his wife Iris, daughter Nadine, son Nigel and five grandchildren.
