Rachel's Trip to Laos
For my trip I went to Laos, Southeast Asia on the 1st until 16th July 2017 with VESA (Volunteer Eco Students Abroad). Throughout my time there I did a range of activities and volunteer work. I was in rural Laos in the Sayaboury area which suffers from a lack of resources. Some of the main things I did was:
1.Day to day care and socialisation of elephants
2.Working within local schools teaching English
3.Restore the local primary schools
I took part in construction and enrichment programmes in the Elephant Conservation Centre and also construction and education programmes at Na Lang Loung School, Ban Na Lang Loung, Sayaboury. At the school, we were able to teach the children English as well as brightening up the buildings with fresh coats of paint, cute murals and install much needed infrastructure.
The ECC’s paramount objective is to rehabilitate formerly domesticated elephants and one day release them into the wild. At the ECC we undertook a range of activities such as:
1.Building and maintenance of the infrastructure (veterinary clinic, elephant nursery etc.)
2.Creating and setting up enrichment exercises
3.Observing the elephants socialisation time
The trip also allowed me to discover cultural aspects of the country while being able to experience and explore the country itself.
